Men’s Lacrosse Falls to UMass Dartmouth in Season Opener
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Six unanswered goals in the second quarter helped propel UMass Dartmouth to a 13-3 victory over MIT in a non-conference men's lacrosse game on Wednesday afternoon. Senior Ernie Park (Plainsboro, N.J.) paced the Engineers with one goal and one assist.
The Corsairs opened the scoring after two minutes elapsed which stood until Park registered the equalizer with one second left in the quarter. UMass Dartmouth responded by rattling off six unanswered goals to take control of the game. An unassisted effort by junior Gabe Blanchet (Hadley, Mass.) ended MIT's scoring drought at the 4:14 mark while Park set up freshman Jake Slonaker (West Windsor, N.J.) for the first goal of his career, trimming the Engineers deficit to 7-3 at the intermission.
Despite the late scoring spurt, MIT was unable to maintain the momentum in the second half as it struggled to find the back of the net. The hosts increased their margin with three-goal efforts in both the third and fourth quarters.
Sophomore Tim Wilczynski (Old Lyme, Conn.) totaled six groundballs, followed by five from classmate Elliot Sykora (Wilmette, Ill.), and four by senior Bryan Beller (Dix Hills, N.Y.). Sophomore Ben Hessels (Laytonsville, Md.) posted six groundballs and was 4-of-9 in faceoffs while junior Mike Gibson (Natick, Mass.) chipped in five groundballs and had a 5-of-8 performance on the faceoff "x". In net, junior Christopher Rullan (Wexford, Pa.) compiled six saves and six groundballs.
Next up for MIT (0-1) will be its first home game of the season against the University of New England on Saturday, March 17.
