MIT Falls to No. 20 Springfield, 12-4
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Four unanswered goals in the second quarter broke open a deadlock and powered nationally-ranked No. 20 Springfield College to a 12-4 win over MIT in a Pilgrim Lacrosse League game on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Dylan Sheehan (Massapequa, N.Y.) registered a game-high four goals for the Pride while senior Ernie Park (Plainsboro, N.J.) set up three goals for the Engineers.
Sheehan opened the scoring less than four minutes into the game but Park found junior Sean Burke (Centennial, Colo.) for the equalizer. Sophomore Ryan Murphy (Mansfield, Mass.) redirected a feed from classmate Devin Abad (East Longmeadow, Mass.) to put Springfield back in front; however, junior Gabe Blanchet (Hadley, Mass.) knotted the score at two late in the frame.
Freshman Kevin Sainte (Belmont, Mass.) bookended the second-quarter spurt as efforts by senior Mike Delia (Wading River, N.Y.) and Murphy gave Springfield a 6-2 advantage at the intermission.
The Pride extended its run into the third quarter courtesy of a Sheehan strike but moments later Burke connected on a Park pass that ended MIT's scoring drought and brought it within four (7-3) at the 9:04 mark. Springfield increased its cushion on sophomore Kevin Freeman's (Middletown, N.Y.) marker which was countered by sophomore Ben Hessels (Laytonsville, Md.). Sheehan completed the hat-trick for the visitors with 1:03 left in the period, raising the score to 9-4.
Springfield tacked on three unanswered goals in the final frame to wrap up the scoring. Senior Shane Ferguson (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) converted a feed from Delia while Sheehan recorded a man-up tally. Murphy provided the last marker with 6:10 on the clock.
Junior Mike Gibson (Natick, Mass.) went 11-of-18 in faceoffs for the Engineers while tallying five groundballs and two caused turnovers. Sophomore Tim Wilczynski (Old Lyme, Conn.) also collected five groundballs as classmate Elliot Sykora (Wilmette, Ill.) chipped in four of his own. In net, junior Christopher Rullan (Wexford, Pa.) amassed 15 saves.
Murphy finished the day with three goals and an assist as Delia recorded one goal and two assists. Sophomore Ryon Lynch (Frederick, Md.) earned a pair of assists while Jon Santer led the Pride with four groundballs. Senior Tim Cimini (West Hartford, Conn.) notched two caused turnovers as sophomore Robert Maher (Katonah, N.Y.) gathered 10 saves.
Both squads host non-conference opponents when they return to action next week. MIT (3-5, 0-1 Pilgrim) will take on Salem State University on Wednesday, April 11 while Springfield (6-3, 2-0 Pilgrim) will square off with Amherst College on Tuesday, April 10.
