CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Five goals in the third quarter helped power Assumption College to an 11-6 win over MIT in a non-conference men’s lacrosse game on Wednesday. Ryan Ballentine tallied one goal and three assists in his second consecutive game for the Engineers (0-2). Kevin Jurgens recorded a hat-trick as the Greyhounds improved to 1-2 on the year.
Will Langevin opened up the scoring by connecting on a feed from Kevin Klaskin midway through the frame. MIT evened the contest on an unassisted strike by Ballentine.
The majority of the second stanza was a defensive battle until Neil Zimmerman scored on a Corey Garvey pass to go ahead with 5:05 on the clock. John Murphy set up Jurgens for the equalizer three minutes later. Assumption then reclaimed the lead (3-2) when Connor Mack found Jurgens with 50 seconds remaining in the half.
The Greyhounds carried the momentum into the third frame with John Mitchell connecting on a pass from Jordan Ruggeri. Ballentine found Garvey for an extra-man goal at 8:17 to cut the Engineers’ deficit in half. After exchanging goals, Assumption tallied three out of the next four goals during the final 5:23 of the period to establish an 8-5 advantage.
Solo efforts by Chris Noyes, Kyle Chaffee, and Tim Roy doubled the Greyhounds’ margin before Zimmerman capped the scoring with an unassisted marker.
Garvey paced the Cardinal and Gray with four groundballs as Garth Grove collected 11 saves. The Greyhounds’ Matt Fletcher recorded a game-high five groundballs while Dan Shea amassed 10 saves in 57 minutes of action. Scott Vogel closed out the contest with a pair of stops.
Next up for MIT will be a road game at Salve Regina University on Saturday, March 14 while Assumption will host Anna Maria College in its home-opener on Wednesday, March 18.
