Babson Holds Off MIT, 9-6

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Five unanswered goals by Babson College in the first half proved to be the difference as it went on to record a 9-6 victory over MIT in a Pilgrim Lacrosse League game on Wednesday afternoon. Bryan Wilbur registered a game-high four goals as the Beavers improved to 6-5 on the year and 4-2 in conference play. Tyler Sorba (two goals), Corey Garvey (one goal and an assist), and Jonathan Stolmeier (one goal and an assist) paced the Engineers as they fell to 3-6 overall and 1-4 in the Pilgrim League.
Matt Enright opened the scoring for Babson after 2:30 had elapsed in the contest. MIT quickly posted the equalizer when Ryan Ballentine found Garvey. On the ensuing face off, Wilbur put the Beavers ahead for good with an unassisted tally. Babson extended its lead to 3-1 at the 4:51 mark on a strike from Wilbur that was set up by Luke Biggins.
The Beavers continued to attack in the second quarter as R.J. Moulton found the back of the net at 12:13. The game remained scoreless for the next 10 minutes until Biggins notched an unassisted goal. Babson entered the break with a 6-1 advantage as Wilbur completed the hat-trick with 1:09 left on a pass from Jon Standen.
The first half of the third quarter was a defensive battle as both sides struggled to find the back of the net. With 7:32 on the clock, Dylan Roden ended MIT's 33 minute scoring drought. The Engineers then narrowed the gap to 6-3 with an unassisted goal by Stolmeier less than two minutes later. The Beavers registered their first goal of the half just two seconds after an extra-man opportunity expired. Moulton found Standen for the score which returned the advantage to four (7-3).
Each side traded goals in the final frame. Sorba led off the trend with an unassisted goal 51 seconds into the period. Jason Wellemeyer responded with his 15th goal of the season, which was followed by a strike from Sorba that gave Garvey the assist. Wilbur notched Babson's last goal of the day with 5:32 on the clock. MIT wrapped up the scoring by converting its first extra-man goal of the game when Stolmeier set up Sherry.
MIT will continue Pilgrim League play at home on Saturday, April 21 as it hosts Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Next up for Babson will be a road game at league foe Western New England College on Wednesday, April 25.
