BABSON PARK, Mass. – Eastern Connecticut State University men's soccer team defeated MIT, 2-1, in game two of the Third Annual Babson Soccer Classic hosted by Babson College. Matt Furman led the way for the Warriors scoring one goal and chipping in an assist in the win. With the win, the Warriors start the season off 1-0 while MIT dips to 1-1.
Eastern Connecticut State struck first when Furman dribbled the ball into the right corner and fired a shot that glanced off an MIT defender and trickled past diving keeper Dylan Rankin at 13:32.
The Warriors' 1-0 lead would last until the 42nd minute, when MIT's Christian Therkelsen stole the ball from a defender and sent a perfect cross into the box from the left side. Zachary Kabelac then headed a shot over goalie Carl Appel and just under the crossbar to even the contest at 1-1 at 41:46.
Eastern Connecticut snapped the tie in the 56th minute when Furman crossed the ball from the left side to Cory Tobler who one-timed the ball inside the right post past Rankin.
Appel finished with seven saves on the day for the Warriors while Rankin tallied four. The Engineers had a 19-10 advantage in shots and a 10-5 edge in corner kicks.
On Sunday, Eastern Connecticut will take on host Babson College at 1:00 p.m. while MIT will take on Wentworth Institute of technology in a 3:30 p.m. game at Hartwell Rogers Field.
