BOSTON, Mass. – MIT men's soccer sophomore Austin Freel (San Diego, Calif.) was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career on Monday afternoon following a very strong performance against conference rival Babson College over the weekend.
In the Engineers' exciting 3-2 win over the Beavers on Saturday afternoon, a game that saw three goals scored within the final five minutes of the second period, Freel notched two goals to lead Tech to a hard-fought victory. His first goal was scored just eight minutes into the first half following a beautiful cross from senior Matthew Monheit (Abington, Pa.), burying the ball in the top left corner of the net.
At the 83 minute mark, Babson took a 2-1 lead, which was short-lived, as the equalizer was scored just one minute later. It looked as if the game would be sent into overtime, but, at 89:10, Freel knocked the ball into the right corner of the net after a corner kick from Monheit, giving MIT the goal it needed to win the game.
The Cardinal and Gray, who are currently 5-3 for the season and 2-0 in NEWMAC play, will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 5 when they host the U.S. Coast Guard Academy at 5:00 p.m.
