BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Sam Cannon (Scarsdale, N.Y.) was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week on Monday afternoon. This is the second time in his career that he has received the recognition. He was also named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Player of the Week, which was announced the following day.
Cannon recorded two shutouts in MIT's 2-0 week with wins over Tufts University on Wednesday and Clark on Saturday. Against Tufts, he made an impressive 15 saves to prevent the Jumbos, who took 32 shots throughout the entire game, from finding the back of the net, helping to lead the Engineers to a close, hard-fought 1-0 victory. In Tech's 2-0 win over Clark, he recorded six saves, one of which was shot point blank at him from inside the net. He is now 3-2 on the season.
Tech is currently 9-3-1 on the season and is the only team to remain undefeated in conference action with a NEWMAC record of 4-0-1. The Cardinal and Gray sit just ahead of Wheaton College in second and Springfield in third.
MIT will play in its second to last non-conference game on Wednesday, Oct. 23 when it hosts Framingham State University at 6:00 p.m. The Engineers will then be on the road to face Springfield College on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1:00 p.m. The season is slowly winding down for MIT, as there are just over two weeks left until the NEWMAC Championships, which will begin on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
