CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - In its second appearance in the ECAC Division III New England Men's Soccer Championship Tournament, MIT finished the day with several firsts. The No. 1-seeded Engineers defeated No. 8 Plymouth State University, 1-0, marking their first tournament win and their first victory over the Panthers. Individually, Jose Ramon Torradas established a new Institute record by tallying his 33rd career assist and Morgan Mills tied the season shutout record. MIT will host No. 4 U.S. Coast Guard Academy in a semifinal match-up on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 1:00 p.m.
Despite having an advantage in shots (5-2) and corner kicks (4-1), Plymouth State struggled to get on the scoreboard in the first half. MIT (13-3-1) was able to match the Panthers' (9-8-1) efforts in the second frame, tallying five shots and four corner kicks apiece. The Engineers ended the scoreless affair in the 69th minute when Ryan Sheffler connected on a pass from Torradas. Plymouth State had a chance to tie the game with 11:52 remaining on a shot by Felix Rosen, but Tech goalie Morgan Mills leapt into the air and blocked the ball with his right hand to preserve the shutout.
Morgan Mills totaled seven saves and posted his sixth shutout of the season. Jayson Smith made one save for the Panthers.
