Squash Tops BC in Opener

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT squash team dazzled with a 6-3 win over visiting Boston College on Saturday, in the season opener for both squads. Austin Anderson, Mick Zomnir, Robert Habib, Geoge Pratt, Joey Lemberg, and Sunny Long all scored victories for the Engineers.

After losing the first two matches, the Cardinal and Gray set the pace the rest of the match. Anderson, playing in the No. 2 slot, defeated BC senior captain Christian Harrington, 11-7, 9-11, 11-6, 11-6. “Harrington’s superb retrieval ultimately did not stand up to Anderson’s front court kills and tight rails,” said MIT head coach Nadeem Mazen.

Competing at No. 5, Pratt swept Andrew Zarrilli, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8, while Lemberg, at No. 7, and Habib, at No. 4, each won in close matches. Lemberg won in five games, 11-5, 14-12, 5-11, 8-11, 11-1; Habib took his match in four games over Teddy Taylor, 12-10, 11-9, 8-11, 11-1.

No. 3 Zomnir swept against Daniel Gleeson, 11-7, 11-6, 11-7. “Though Gleeson controlled the T much of the time, Zomnir’s superior retrieval and strong backcourt play won him three consecutive games,” commented Mazen.

Long, a freshman, playing at No. 9, defeated Lex Cardone, 11-7, 9-11, 13-11, 11-6. “Long’s stronger shots and untiring retrieval kept him on top,” Mazen stated.

In what Mazen called “the real nail-biter of the contest,” senior captain Andrew Yoon fell to BC’s Josh Rosenblat, 11-8, 11-6, 10-12, 9-11, 6-11. “With excellent retrieval and devastating front-court kills, Yoon quickly went up two games,” Mazen said. “[But], ultimately, Yoon’s aggressive shots in games three and four were too risky, giving Rosenblatt both games.”

Connor Kirschbaum and Ishaan Chugh played well, despite setbacks in the first two matches. Kirschbaum, a freshman, fell, 5-11, 6-11, 7-11, to Max Ortwein at No. 8, while Chugh, at No. 6, dropped a 9-11, 10-12, 5-11 decision to Joe Pasquale.

“Only in its second year as a club sport, BC brought a full, energetic team,” Mazen said.
