Nov. 19, 2008

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT squash team opened its season by welcoming four squads, Bard, Bryant University, Boston College and the University of Vermont to the Zesiger Center this past weekend. The Engineers got off to an impressive start, picking up four convincing wins in two days, all by the score of 9-0.

Tech kicked off its 2008-09 campaign against Bryant on Friday night. Junior Andrew Yoon picked up a win from the top spot, surrendering just two points in a 9-1, 9-0, 9-1 win over Yohan Sachder. Austin Anderson was equally as impressive in the no. five position, defeating Tim Inring, 9-2, 9-0, 9-0, to help MIT start off the season in the win column.

Later that night against Bard, a pair of Engineers swept their counterparts, en route to the 9-0 match victory. Michael Zomnir in the third spot and Robert Habib at no. eight, each recorded 9-0, 9-0, 9-0 decisions.

The Cardinal and Gray returned to action on Saturday against Boston College. While the Eagles only traveled with four competitors, officially making the contest a 9-0 win for Tech, the two squads battled it out on the courts, with the hosts taking eight of the nine matches played.

In their final match of the weekend, the Engineers took on Vermont, once again picking up the 9-0 victory. Anderson was again solid, sweeping his opponent at no. five. Ishaan Chugh showed great determination in the sixth position, battling for hard-fought, 10-8, 9-2, 6-9, 9-0 victory.

With the four early wins, MIT has already matched its total from a year ago. Head coach Seth Packard’s squad will look to continue their streak at this weekend’s Dartmouth Fall Classic. The Engineers take on Navy and Wesleyan on Saturday, November 22.
