SOMERS, Wis. – Senior Michael Liao (Newport Beach, Calif.) was named the Philip Hunsaker CollegeSwimming.com Men's Division III Swimmer of the Week, following a busy weekend in the pool that earned him five victories. A few days prior to this, he was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Swimmer of the Week, was part of the 200-yard medley relay that was named Relay of the Week and was selected as the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Swimmer of the Week.
Tech started the weekend by facing Williams College on the road on Friday, narrowly falling by a score of 159-137, before coming back the next day to take down Amherst College at home with a 185-115 win. Against Williams, Liao won his signature events, the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard breaststroke, with times of 57.39 and 2:05.53 respectively. The following day, he won those same events, improving in both significantly with times of 55.31 and 2:00.84, while also being part of the winning 200 medley relay with its time of 1:32.73. He broke the Zesiger Center pool record by a few tenths of a second in the 200 breast and is currently ranked second in Division III, while his 100 breast places him third in the nation.
With no more dual meets remaining on their schedule, the Engineers will next compete in the Wheaton Invitational next Friday and Saturday, Feb. 7-8. The NEWMAC Championships will take place at WPI this year from Thursday through Sunday, Feb. 20-23.
