Men's Swimming and Diving Sweeps NEWMAC Major Awards After Winning 12th League Title

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (February 20) - After winning its 12th league title in program history and ninth straight, the MIT men's swimming and diving team swept the 2017 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) major awards. Freshman Bouke Edskes (Rockville, Md.) was named as the Men's Co-Swimmer of the Year and Men's Rookie of the Year, while classmate Sam Solomon (Rockville, Md.) was named as the Men's Diver of the Year.

In the diving well, Solomon registered first place finishes and broke his own school records in both disciplines. He started the record breaking on Thursday when he put together a score of 541.90 during prelims on the 3-meter board and followed it up with a score of 534.90 during finals for a spot on the NEWMAC All-Conference First Team. Then on Saturday, Solomon totaled 534.00 on the 1-meter board for his second school record and second All-Conference honor of the weekend.

In the pool, Edskes set four meet records, broke on school records and swam eight NCAA "B" cut times over the four-day meet. Individually, Edskes claimed the NEWMAC title in the 200-IM in a collegiate best time of 1:50.88 and followed it up with a first place finish in the 400-IM (3:57.01) and the 200-fly (1:49.34). During time trials, Edskes smashed the meet record in the 100-fly with a time of 48.70.

Edskes also swam in four relays - all four of which finished first with NCAA "B" cut times and three of which broke meet records. In the 200-free relay the "A" team clocked a time of 1:21.71, the 400-free "A" team touched the wall in 3:00.16, the 200-medley "A" team registered a time of 1:29.04 and the 400-medley "A" team notched a time of 3:18.22. In addition, Edskes' 50-back time to leadoff the 200-medley relay was a school record as he swam the leg in 22.20-seconds.
