MIT Upends Emerson Tennis

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In their first match of the spring season, MIT men's tennis team had no trouble dispatching Emerson College. Tech lost just one set and beat the Lions 8-1 at the JB Carr Tennis Bubble on Thursday afternoon.

It was a clean sweep in doubles for the Engineers, highlighted by the second doubles tandem of Larry Pang and Curtis Wu. The pair played their way to an 8-3 victory while first singles Matthew Skalak and Ken Van Tilburg powered their way to an 8-4 victory over Emerson's Mitch Lance and Ken Nikravesh. Robert Wheeler and Troy Astorino completed the 3-0 sweep by the same score over James Landino and Matt Merksamer of Emerson.

It was more of the same in singles with different faces, as none of the MIT doubles players competed in singles play. Edwin Zhang took care of Nikravesh by a 6-1, 6-0 score, the same score by which Brian Oldfield defeated Lance at second singles.

Andrew Cooper (6-0, 6-1) and Juan Eyzaguirre (6-0, 6-2) each won easily in singles play, as did Max Nelson, who beat Landino 6-3, 6-0.

Emerson was able to salvage a point at fifth singles, as Merksamer was able to get the better of MIT's Michael Walsh. After jumping out to a lead with a 6-4 first set win, Walsh dropped the next set 7-6 and lost the set in a tiebreaker 7 points to 1.

MIT (1-1) will be back on the court tomorrow night with an 8:00 PM date with New York University. They then have a 1:00 PM match at the Carr Tennis Bubble against Stevens Tech. Emerson, who drops to 0-2, will have off until March 17th, when they travel to Rhode Island College.
