MIT Edges Bates in Men’s Tennis

Cambridge, Mass. – In a tightly contested affair, the MIT Engineers men's tennis team outlasted Bates College for its fourth win in a row. MIT beat the Bobcats 5-4 on Saturday afternoon at JB Carr Tennis Bubble.

The Engineers grabbed two points in the doubles round, although Bates was able to win 8-4 at first singles through Robert Crampton and Matt Bettles. The pair got the best of Larry Pang and Curtis Wu. MIT battled back and Matthew Skalak and Ken Van Tilburg beat Tim Berg and Samuel Woods 8-4 to even up the match. Tech grabbed the advantage after a third doubles win by Andrew Cooper and Edwing Zhang (8-3).

Bates was strong at the top again in singles, as Bettles and Crampton each were victorious. Bettles got the better of Van Tilburg (6-1, 6-3) and Crampton was too much for Pang, beating him 6-1, 6-4.

It was the lower half of the MIT singles roster that took the victory, thanks to wins by Zhang, Skalak, and Brian Oldfield. Skalak beat Kyle DeSisto 6-4, 6-1 at sixth singles while Zhang beat Tim Berg by a 7-5, 6-1 count.

The Engineers improve to 4-1 on the year and will host Amherst College on March 26th. Bates evens their record to 3-3 and will travel March 18th to play at Mary Washington.
