BOSTON, Mass. - Following its final conference match of the season, the MIT men's tennis team earned two New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) weekly awards. Senior Edwin Zhang (Falls Church, Va.) was named Singles Player of the Week for the third time this season, while sophomores Jeffrey Bu (Arcadia, Calif.) and Dennis Garcia (Corpus Christi, Texas) received Doubles Team of the Week nods.
In MIT's final two conference tilts of the season, Zhang went 2-0 at No. 1 singles to help lead the Engineers to a 9-0 victory over Emerson College and an 8-1 win against Babson College last week. First against the Lions, Zhang blanked Niklas Rhodes, handing him a score of 6-0, 6-0. The following day, he had a 6-1, 4-1 victory over the Beavers' Roberto Perez.
Bu and Garcia played No. 1 doubles for the first time this season in MIT's match against Emerson. The pair defeated Rhodes and Colin Leeds by a score of 8-2. In the four doubles matches that the two have played, they have won all but one.
Tech will face Brandeis University later on today before playing its final match of the regular season on Wednesday, April 23, facing Tufts University on the road. As the Engineers were undefeated in league play, they won the regular season title for the 16th consecutive year and will host the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament.
