Engineers Top Springfield, 8-1, in NEWMAC Opener

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT men’s tennis team kicked off NEWMAC play with a solid 8-1 victory over Springfield College on Saturday. The Engineers extended their winning streak to four and improved their ledger to 8-1 on the year.

Brian Wee and David Iba cruised through their No. 2 doubles match, notching an 8-0 decision. Peden Nichols and Ryan Castonia defeated Eric Henne and John Schrank, 8-3, as Kevin Pang and Ken Van Tilburg edged out the Pride, 9-7, in the top spot.

Pang recorded a hard-fought 6-3, 1-6, 10-8 victory in the No. 1 singles position as Van Tilburg defeated Trevor Romanzi, 6-1, 6-3. Wee overpowered his counterpart in the No. 3 spot with a 6-1, 6-0 decision while Nichols posted a 6-1, 6-3 win in the No. 4 slot. Castonia fell to Henne, 6-4, 6-4, as Iba closed out the day with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
