MIT Blanks Springfield in NEWMAC Opener

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT men's tennis team kicked off NEWMAC play by shutting out Springfield College, 7-0, on Thursday. With the win, the Engineers improved to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while the Pride fell to 2-4 and 0-1.

The No. 2 doubles tandem of Thomas Dohlman and Mark Egan quickly defeated their opponents, 8-1. Evan Tindell and Eric Beren notched an 8-5 decision in the top spot as Peden Nichols and Michael Price won, 8-6.

Tindell took his No. 1 singles match, 6-1, 6-2, while Dohlman defeated Justin Freitas, 6-3, 6-4. Beren recorded a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the No. 3 slot as Egan won, 6-3, 6-0. Nichols only dropped two games in his 6-2, 6-0 decision in the No. 5 spot. Making his collegiate debut, Ryan Castonia lost his first set, 6-1, but outlasted Bobby Schlink, 7-6 (3), in the tiebreaker. The rookie clinched the match with a 10-5 score in the super tiebreaker.
