BOSTON, Mass. – With members of the MIT men's indoor track and field team heading in many different directions, a group of Engineers traveled across the river to Boston University to the John Thomas Terrier Invitational on Saturday. With no team scoring opportunities, the runners were competing for top performances and qualifying times for the various championships.
To start things off on Saturday, junior Matt Jordan (Matthews, N.C.) ran well in the 5000m, crossing the line with a time of 14:58.04 to earn fourth place. Junior Harrison Hunter (Northampton, Mass.) was the first of four Engineers to complete the 800m, finishing with a time of 1:54.45 to take 27th. Classmate Chadd Kiggins (Xenia, Ohio) followed in 32nd place in 1:54.96, freshman Andrew Mullen (Rochester, N.Y.) was 58th with a 1:58.16 and sophomore Dominique Hoskin (Ellicott City, Md.) was 97th in 2:01.73.
In the prelims of the 60m Hurdles, sophomore Michael Kaba (Jackson, N.J.) took 41st place with his time of 9.10. Classmate States Lee (Charlotte, N.C.) was the first of the Cardinal and Gray to cross the line in the 400m, coming in 25th place with a 48.98. Fellow sophomore Derek Barnes (Coto De Caza, Calif.) was 31st in 49.25, senior Tyler Singer-Clark (Falmouth, Mass.) came in 38th in 49.54 and junior Nicholas Diamantoni (Boca Raton, Fla.) was 50th in 49.99.
Senior Justin Bullock (Detroit, Mich.) was 52nd in the mile with his time of 4:18.59, and was followed by freshmen Nicholas Matthews (Houston, Texas) in 67th in 4:20.79, Ken Leidal (Downingtown, Pa.) in 81st place with a 4:24.02 and Matt McEachern (San Diego, Calif.) in 88th in 4:25.28. Sophomore Ian Tolan (Binghamton, N.Y.) also raced in that event, coming in 99th with a 4:26.76. Freshman Henry Tareque (Ossining, N.Y.) finished in 39th in the 500m with a time of 1:07.12, while classmate Gary Burnett (Amherst, Mass.) was 52nd in 1:08.78.
It was Singer-Clark who finished ahead of the crowd of Engineers in the 200m, coming in 34th with a 22.38. Diamantoni was 41st with a 22.53, Lee was 56th in 22.76 and Barnes came in 82nd with a time of 23.05. Junior Samuel Parker (Menlo Park, Calif.) fared well in the 1000m, coming in 15th place with a 2:27.99. Hunter followed in 24th in 2:30.74 and Bullock was 34th with his time of 2:32.02. The final running event of the day was the 4x400 relay, with MIT's A relay placing 13th with a time of 3:18.13, finishing just three tenths of a second ahead of Morgan State's A relay.
In the field events, junior Ken Cooper (Newport Beach, Calif.) placed well in the Shot Put, coming in 12th with a throw of 50-00.75, and, later on in the meet, came in ninth place in the Weight Throw with a throw of 54-10.00. In Pole Vault, junior Benjamin Schreck (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) came 13th when he cleared the bar in 14-05.25.
After this busy weekend is done, the Cardinal and Gray will have just one week off from competition before the Tufts Stampede at Tufts University next Saturday, Feb. 1.
