SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – MIT's men's outdoor track and field team, which is currently ranked 17th in the nation, kicked off the New England Division III Championships at Springfield College on Thursday with a strong performance by sophomore Adrian Samsel (Whippany, N.J.) in the first five events of the decathlon.
Samsel won three of the five events contested on Thursday, including the 100-meter dash, finishing in a final time of 11.23 to win by 0.36 seconds. In the long jump, Samsel cleared 21-11.00 to earn 739 points in the decathlon contest. His third win came in the 400-meter dash, comfortably crossing the finish line in 49.73, more than a second and a half ahead of the field.
Samsel finished fourth in both the high jump, clearing 5-11.25, and the shot put, where he threw a 36-00.75.
Currently leading the decathlon field with a total of 3557 points, Samsel will complete the remaining five events tomorrow. Other members of the men's and women's track and field teams will join him in Springfield for the final two days of competition.
