Men's Track and Field Finishes 11th at NEICAAA Championship

THE BASICS:

- Location: Williamstown, Mass. (Lee Track at the Weston Athletic Complex)

- The Lead: At the 2017 NEICAAA Outdoor Championship, the MIT men's track and field team placed 11th out of 37 schools and was the third Division III team over the two-day event at Williams College.  

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- On Friday, senior Danny Newman (St. Charles, Mo.) finished 12th in the 200-meter prelims in 22.01, while senior Henry Tareque (Ossining, N.Y.) was 29th in the 400 in a time of 50.89 seconds. Freshman Bobby Upton (Wexford, Pa.) posted a 17th-place finish in the pole vault with a clearance of 14 feet, 5.25 inches, along with a 22nd-place showing in the 400-meter hurdles at 56.20 seconds by junior Chris Sweeney (Woodland Park, N.J.).

- The 3,000-meter steeplechase was the top event for the Engineers on Saturday as sophomore Aidan Gilson (Florence, Mass.) and junior Ben Freed (Frederick, Md.) each earned All-Region honors. Gilson solidified his place in the NCAA Outdoor Championship as he crossed in second to run a PR of 9:05.61 and rank sixth in the nation in Division III. Freed crossed in fourth in a time of 9:13.78, which currently places him 21st in the country. The final All-Region honor on the track came in the 1,500 meters as senior Colin Godwin (Cary, N.C.) finished third at 3:52.36.

- Junior Cody Bratten (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) was eighth in the discus at 150 feet, nine inches to earn All-Region honors, while also finished 18th in the shot put at 45 feet, 1.5 inches. Sophomore Jon Fakkema (Blaine, Wash.) threw 141 feet, five inches in the discus as well, placing 16th.

UP NEXT:

- MIT hosts a Last Chance Qualifier on Thursday, May 18th beginning at 4 p.m., which will mark the team's final meet prior to the 2017 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championship at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
