Men's Track Takes Seventh NEWMAC Title

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The men's track team prolonged an impressive streak on Saturday afternoon at the 2006 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championship. Host MIT accumulated 214.50 points and captured its sixth straight and seventh overall NEWMAC title while finishing ahead of second place Coast Guard (178). The Engineers won seven individual events en route to victory.

The competition was highlighted by several multi-event winners. As the only athlete to garner three event wins, senior star Uzoma Orji of MIT set a new meet record in the shot put (58-06.00). He also won the discus (147-10) and the hammer throw (195-05) to lead the Engineers with 30 total points on the day.

 Freshman Michael Wright of Wheaton picked up victories in both the 100 (10.94) and 200 meter dash (22.51). Also with two event victories from Wheaton was freshman Jon Cunha, who won both the 110 hurdles (14.77) and the 400 hurdles (55.91). United States Coast Guard Academy junior Mike Flint took first (1:56.59) in the 800 and repeated in the 1500 (3:59.87).

Also earning victories for the Engineers were junior Spencer Dudley, sophomore Chris Bruce, sophomore Omari Stephens and senior Thad Wozniak. Dudley finished first in the 10,000 with a time of 32:57.33, and Bruce placed first in the 3000 steeplechase (10:03.11). In the field events, Stephens set a first place mark in the pole vault (14-06.00), while Wozniak won the long jump (22-00.75).

The Engineers will look to follow up their impressive performance with another solid outing next weekend at the New England Division III Championship in Springfield, Massachusetts.
