Uzoma Orji Selected ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Athlete of the Year

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Senior Uzoma Orji capped off his incredible athletic career at MIT by being named the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men's Track and Field and Cross Country Athlete of the Year. A runner-up for this accolade on last year's ballot, he collected his third consecutive First-Team selection. Orji, a 12-time All-America, has won four national titles and has been chosen the NCAA National Championship Field Athlete of the Meet on four occasions. Previous Engineers who have received the Academic All-America Athlete of the Year award include track and field man William Singhose `90 and football players Rod Tranum `93 and Brad Gray `98.

Indoor Track and Field Season 

  • Three-time NCAA National Championship Field Athlete of the Meet
  • 2006: NCAA Champion in shot put (58'3.75"), runner-up in weight throw (63'11")
  • 2005: Set national record in weight throw at NCAA Championship (64'9.25") for first place, finished fourth in shot put (56'3.75")
  • 2004: NCAA Champion in shot put (59'6.25"), finished fifth in weight throw (60'3.75")

    Outdoor Track and Field Season 
  • 2006: National Championship Field Athlete of the Meet; Captured first place in shot put (60'2.5"), finished second in hammer throw (198'4")
  • 2005: Was a runner-up at the NCAA Championships in the shot put (58'3") and hammer (189'2")
