CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the fifth and sixth consecutive matches, the nationally-ranked No. 10 MIT men's volleyball team denied its opponents a set as it defeated Elms College (30-13, 30-23, 30-24) and Mount Ida College (30-16, 30-8, 30-13) on Saturday. With the wins, the Engineers improved to 27-7 on the year and 12-2 in North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) New England Division play. Matt Hohenberger amassed 11 aces on the day, helping him surpass teammate Mike Demyttenaere's record for aces in a season which was previously 85.
Against host and conference foe Elms, Alex Becherer tallied 14 kills, nine digs, four aces, and two blocks. Hohenberger racked up six aces and connected on all three of his hitting attempts in the first set. Troy Tamas posted six kills and three aces while David Thomas notched four kills and two blocks. Patrick Vatterott totaled five kills as Benson George contributed four kills, two blocks, and an ace. Caine Jette amassed 26 assists and five digs while Tim Lee dished out 11 assists. Daniel Sngiem rounded out the Cardinal and Gray with eight digs and two aces.
In the Engineers' sweep of Mount Ida, Vatterott, Thomas, and Demyttenaere each recorded eight kills while Vatterott and Thomas both added two blocks. Hohenberger compiled five kills, five aces, and four digs as Sngiem earned a trio of aces. Jeremy Velazquez and Eric Reuland both collected five digs. Lee distributed 28 assists while Jette chipped in seven assists.
