No. 13 Engineers Split at Stevens

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Facing a pair of nationally-ranked foes, the No. 13 MIT men’s volleyball team defeated No. 10 Vassar College (28-30, 30-28, 30-22, 30-19) but fell to host and No. 8 Stevens Institute of Technology (30-22, 30-23, 30-26) on Saturday. Following the one-day trip, the Engineers’ ledger moved to 7-3 on the year.

In its first win over Vassar since 1993, the Cardinal and Gray hit a blistering .346 and surrendered only one ace in 88 service receptions. Matt Hohenberger powered the front row with 20 kills and a .545 hitting percentage to go along with three blocks and three aces. Mike Demyttenaere compiled 16 kills, a .500 hitting performance, six blocks, and two aces as David Thomas posted 13 kills, a .417 hitting percentage, and three blocks. Garrett Winther amassed 34-errorless service receptions, eight digs, seven kills, and three blocks while Patrick Vatterott contributed eight kills and four blocks. Alex Becherer collected a team-high 10 digs in addition to two aces as Eric Reuland chipped in nine digs. Tim Lee rounded out the squad with 58 assists and nine digs.

Thomas led the charge against Stevens as he totaled 11 kills and three blocks. Hohenberger racked up eight kills, three blocks, three digs, and MIT’s lone ace. Demyttenaere posted six kills as Vatterott notched five kills and two blocks. Winther and Reuland both collected five digs while Winther added a solo block. Becherer bolstered the defense with four digs as Lee finished with 28 assists and three blocks.
