MIT Finishes 11th in Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Rankings
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the second year in a row MIT placed 11th among all Division III schools in the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) annual Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. The Engineers’ Institute-best finish once again registered as the highest performance by the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC).

Tech Lands Six on the Academic All-District At-Large Teams
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Six MIT student-athletes were recently named to the Capital One Academic All-District At-Large teams, including a pair that also garnered national recognition from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). In addition to sophomore swimmer, Wyatt Ubellacker, and field hockey standout, Molly McShane, who landed on the Academic All-America squads, Keri Dixon, Beth Stavely, Tim Lee and Columbus Leonard earned regional recognition as part of District One. The At-Large category is traditionally the most competitive of the CoSIDA awards, as it encompasses the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo and wrestling.

MIT Water Polo Athletes Honored for Academic Success
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Eight MIT water polo student-athletes were recently named to the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Scholar Athlete Team for the 2010 season. In addition to the individual accolades, Tech also received recognition for its overall team success, posting the fourth-highest team grade point average in the CWPA.

John Preis Earns First Team All-America Nod
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior John Preis was named to the First Team and teammates Craig Cheney and Columbus Leonard were tabbed as Honorable Mention All-America by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC). Preis becomes the first athlete from the program to garner First Team honors since Dan Jacobs and Peter Van Buskirk in 2003.

Three Engineers Named to CWPA All-North Teams
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT freshman Craig Cheney was named the conference’s Rookie of the Year and teammates Columbus Leonard and John Preis joined him on the All-Northern Division Team, as announced by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) at the league’s annual awards’ celebration over the weekend. Leonard and Preis were tabbed to the All-North First Team while Cheney collected a Second Team nod in addition to his top newcomer honors.

Brown Pulls Away from Water Polo in Second Half at CWPA Eastern Championship

Water Polo Captures Division III Eastern Championship with 9-7 Win Over Johns Hopkins
NEW LONDON, Conn.--The Connecticut College mens water polo program hosted the Division III Eastern Championship at Lott Natatorium this weekend. Fourth seeded MIT (10-7) won three of its four matches and outlasted Johns Hopkins University in a 9-7 triumph Sunday to win the Division III Eastern Championship. Senior center John Preis scored nine goals over the weekend to lead the Engineers and was honored as the most valuable player. Brian Gardiner and Columbus Leonard joined Preis on the first team for the champs.

Engineers Outlast Harvard in 10-6 Win
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. In front of an enthusiastic crown, in the final regular season home game of the season, the MIT water polo team pulled away from visiting Harvard University for a 10-6 win in Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Northern Division action Friday night. The Engineers outscored the visiting Crimson, 6-2 over the middle two periods, as they improve to 8-6 and conclude their Northern Division regular season slate with a 5-2 ledger.

Columbus Leonard and Craig Cheney Receive CWPA Accolades
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. Following a successful weekend road-trip that saw the MIT water polo team win two out of three conference games, Columbus Leonard and Craig Cheney earned Player of the Week honors from the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) on Wednesday. Leonard was named the CWPA Northern Division Defensive Player of the Week while Cheney was tabbed as Rookie of the Week. Tech downed Connecticut College on Friday night, 16-6, and Queens College on Saturday, 15-14, before falling to St. Francis College, 16-7, and now stand at 7-6 overall and 4-2 in CWPA Northern Division play.

Water Polo Takes Two of Three in Weekend Road Trip
BROOKLYN, N.Y. The MIT water polo team hit the road for three games over the weekend and came away with a pair of victories over Connecticut College and Queens College, before losing to St. Francis (N.Y.) in the final game of the weekend. The Engineers downed Connecticut College, 16-6, and Queens, 15-14, to improve their overall record to 7-6 and are now 4-2 in Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Northern Division play.

MIT Comeback Falls Short Against Brown
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. A furious fourth-quarter rally came up just short, as the MIT water polo team could not convert on its final possession, ultimately losing to Brown University, 5-4, in Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) action on Friday night. After falling behind, 4-2, late in the third, Tech scored a pair of goals in the final period and had the ball with 26 seconds remaining but John Preis was denied and the Bears (11-4, 3-1 CWPA) held on for the win. The loss is the first in the CWPA Northern Division for the Engineers, who fall to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the division.

Columbus Leonard Named CWPA Defensive Player of the Week
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. Coming off a weekend sweep that saw the MIT water polo team improve to 2-0 in league play, junior goalkeeper Columbus Leonard has been named the Northern Division Defensive Player of the Week by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA). Leonard helped anchor the MIT defense in a pair of wins over Fordham University, 13-10, and Iona College, 11-8.

Water Polo Completes Weekend Sweep with 11-8 Win Over Iona
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. On the strength of five unanswered, fourth quarter goals, the MIT water polo team downed visiting Iona College, 11-8, on Sunday morning at the Zesiger Center Pool. The win capped a 2-0 home-stand over the weekend, following a 13-10 victory over Fordham on Saturday night. The games marked the start of Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Northern Division play for the Cardinal and Gray, who improved to 2-0 in the conference and 5-3 overall.

MIT Ranks Fourth Among All NCAA Institutions in 2010 NCSA Collegiate Power Rankings
CHICAGO, Ill. – The National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) recently announced its eighth annual Collegiate Power Rankings. Following another tremendous year, the Engineers were listed fourth overall in securing their highest ranking in the history of the report. The NCSA Athletic Recruiting’s Collegiate Power Rankings assess the academic and athletics standards of all NCAA athletic programs across the country. The Power Rankings were developed to help prospective student athletes and their families evaluate the particular strengths of the top colleges and universities at the Division I, II and III levels.

Water Polo Wins Opener at ECAC Championship, 7-6, over Harvard
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. A five-goal first-half deficit was just too much for Harvard to climb back from Friday afternoon, as the Crimson was nipped, 7-6, by its cross-town rival MIT in the first round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference championship at Blodgett Pool.

Cheney and Leonard Earn CWPA Weekly Honors
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. Following an outstanding debut performance at this weekends MIT Invitational, Craig Cheney and Columbus Leonard were honored by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA). Cheney was named the Northern Division Rookie of the Week while Leonard earned Divisional Defensive Player of the Week accolades. Cheney tallied eight goals and two assists to go along with five steals, as the Engineers went 1-1 to open the 2010 campaign. Leonard totaled 23 saves in the two games.

Water Polo Splits a Pair of Games at Season Opening Invitational
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. The MIT water polo team split its first two games of the 2010 campaign in the MIT Invitational Tournament at the Zesiger Center Pool on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers dropped a thrilling, sudden-death match to St. Francis, 12-11, before coming back to defeat Cal Lutheran, 9-5, in their second game of the day.

MIT Announces 2010 Fall Webcasting Schedule
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - MIT has announced the following dates for its 2010 Fall Webcast schedule. In addition to broadcasting the Engineers' football, men's and women's soccer, women's volleyball and water polo teams, Tech will begin offering webcasts for field hockey for the first time in 2010.
