Water Polo Opens Season with Home Invitational Saturday
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In what has become an annual Labor Day weekend tradition, MIT will host its annual water polo Invitational in the Zesiger pool this weekend, welcoming local foes Brown University and Harvard University, in addition to the squad from California Baptist University. The host Engineers will square off against all three teams on Saturday, September 3, beginning with a match-up against the Crimson at 9:00 a.m. Cal Baptist also draws each of the three opponents, while Brown and Harvard will both play a pair of games.
The Cardinal and Gray begin an era of new leadership this weekend, as Mark Lawrence takes over the reins as head coach for the departed Adam Foley. Lawrence inherits an experienced squad that returns five of its top seven scorers from a year ago, including the reigning Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Northern Division Rookie of the Year, Craig Cheney (Sherwood, Ore.). Also returning for his fourth season in net for the Engineers is senior goalkeeper, Columbus Leonard (Mill Valley, Calif.), who already holds a plethora of program records.
The Brown Bears are coming off a successful 2010 campaign that saw them advance to the title game of the CWPA Northern Championship and finish fifth at the Eastern Championship. Leading scorer Svetozar Stefanovic returns and will look to pace the Bears' attack again this year.
Harvard earned a fifth-place finish at the Northern Championship last year but will need to replace an excellent senior class, losing its three leading scorers from a year ago to graduation. The Crimson will look for senior goalkeeper, Alexandre Popp, to provide leadership to a young squad that features 10 freshmen or sophomores on its roster.
Cal Baptist had one of its most successful seasons in program history in 2010, advancing to the championship game of the NAIA Invite and winning a program-record 32 games but will need to replace departed All-American, Aaron Steiger.
