CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - In a back and forth game against Mercyhurst at home on Friday night, the MIT water polo team lost, 9-12. Ory Tasman (Orlando, Fla.) recorded four goals throughout the game, while fellow freshman Kale Rogers (Newberg, Ore.) added three more. The Engineers are now 3-4 for the season.
Within 15 seconds of the start of the game, Mercyhurst had scored their first goal and added another before junior Andrew Dorne (Irvine, Calif.) was able to put MIT on the board. Both teams scored one more goal, with Rogers scoring for the Engineers, before the first period ended with Mercyhurst leading, 3-2.
Early into the second period, Tasman scored his first goal of the night, followed quickly by one by junior Craig Cheney (Sherwood, Ore.), who scored on an open net. No sooner had MIT gained the lead did the Lakers score another goal, but Tasman followed up by sending the ball to the back of the net again. With one more goal for Mercyhurst and another by Rogers, the second period wrapped up with Mercyhurst still ahead, 6-7.
The Engineers gained control in the early minutes of the third period after goals by Tasman and Rogers. By the end of the period, however, Mercyhurst had overtaken MIT to end the game at 9-12.
Sophomore Spencer Boone (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) was in the net for the entire game and totaled 11 saves. In the last few minutes of play, he made two back-to-back blocks, preventing the Lakers from making any more goals.
The Engineers will return to action when they host local CWPA rival Harvard for the second time this season on Friday, Sept. 21 at 8:00 p.m.
