BOSTON, Mass. - MIT men's cross country, who has been ranked as high as fourth in the nation in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll, claimed its 16th consecutive New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) title on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Franklin Park. Tech has claimed the NEWMAC trophy every year since the inception of the conference in 1998.
The Engineers wrapped up the Championships with 18 points, improving significantly on last year's performance, where they finished with 33 points. Coast Guard came in second place with 44 points and WPI was third with 96. MIT took eight of the top 12 positions, with all of those runners earning All-Conference accolades. Senior Roy Wedge (Lawrence, Kan.), who came in third place last year, finished first in the 8k with his time of 25:07.19 and was named NEWMAC Runner of the Year for his performance. Sophomore Matthew Deyo (Manlius, N.Y.) came in directly behind Wedge with a 25:30.94.
Following close behind in fourth place was freshman Rory Beyer (San Mateo, Calif.) in his first conference championship appearance, finishing with a time of 25:38.96, coming in just three seconds behind Gary Ezzo of Coast Guard and earning NEWMAC Rookie of the Year honors. Juniors Allen Leung (Arcadia, Calif.) and Benji Xie (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) came in fifth and sixth place with their times of 25:40.18 and 25:51.47 respectively.
Closing out the top 14 performers were sophomore Ian Tolan (Binghamton, N.Y.) in 10th with a 26:07.94, freshman Matt McEachern (San Diego, Calif.) in 11th in 26:12.03 and junior Matt Jordan (Matthews, N.C.) in 12th with a time of 26:16.72.
Tech will return to the cross country trail in just under two weeks when it travels to the University of Southern Maine for the second time this season for the New England Division III Regional Championships, which will take place on Saturday, Nov. 16.
