Men's Cross Country Tabbed as NEWMAC Favorite in Preseason Coaches Poll

Westwood, Mass. (August 30) -- The MIT men's cross country team, which placed seventh at the 2016 NCAA Division III National Championship, has been chosen first in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Preseason Coaches Poll. The Engineers won their 19th straight NEWMAC title last year, along with the NCAA New England Regional Championship.

Entering this year as No. 6 in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Preseason National Poll, the Engineers tie their highest preseason national ranking in program history. Under the direction of head coach Halston Taylor, MIT opens the regular season at the Purple Valley Classic on September 23rd at Williams College.

Junior Dennis Maloney (New Albany, Ohio) is the team's top returner after earning USTFCCCA All-American honors in 2016 and finishing as the runner-up at the NEWMAC Championship. Maloney was also fourth at the NCAA New England Regional Championship meet, while MIT also welcomes back six NEWMAC All-Conference performers for 2017.
