CUMBERLAND, MAINE - John Brewer and Eric Khatchadourian finished fourth and fifth overall, respectively, and the MIT Engineers finished third in the team standings at the 2004 Twin Brook Cross Country Invitational. Tech also previewed its chances at another NEWMAC crown, by defeating four conference opponents in the 12-team field.
Although Ben Schmeckpeper, MIT's senior captain and the Twin Brooks course record-holder, was sidelined for Saturday's race, Brewer's continued improvement kept MIT in the team race. Brewer finished in 27:08, just four seconds off the runner-up finish on the slow and rolling course. Khatchadourian enjoyed one of his better efforts of the season with a fifth-place finish. Crossing the line in 27:15, Khatchadourian outkicked Matt Griego of Brandeis and Keene State's Joe Hegarty to secure his spot among the top five.
Keene State ran a full squad and surprised few with an impressive team victory. Scoring 49 points, Keene State cruised over No. 5 Tufts, who were obviously not at full strength. The Jumbos finished with 70 points, while the Engineers totaled 77. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy provided Tech with its stiffest conference competition, although the Bears finished fourth with 102 points.
