Engineers Fall to Emerson, 66-48
BOSTON, Mass. – In the opening game of the Emerson College Tip Off Tournament, the MIT women's basketball team fell to the host Lions, 66-48, on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers (1-1) will square off with Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20 in the consolation game.
Freshman Alexxis Isaac (San Antonio, Texas) tallied nine rebounds, four assists, four steals, and two blocks while junior Lauren Sascha Burton (Seattle, Wash.) paced MIT with 10 points to go along with five boards. Sophomore Rachel Hunt (Arlington Heights, Ill.) posted nine points, seven rebounds including five off the offensive glass, and two blocks as classmate Tamara Pena (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) registered eight points with three free throws coming during the final 16 seconds of play. Coming off the bench sophomore Sharon Hao (San Jose, Calif.) notched eight points and four rebounds while junior Anna Merrifield (Honolulu, Hawaii) had five points and four assists.
Burton opened the game with a three-pointer and added a free throw less than a minute later which was matched by Emerson. A pair of free throws from Hunt put MIT back in front, but the Lions responded with an 11-2 run to go up 15-8 at the 13:30 mark. The Engineers countered with eight unanswered points, featuring back-to-back layups from Hunt, to take a 16-15 edge.
Amy Sherman drained a three on Emerson's next trip down the court; however, sophomore Margo Batie's (Los Angeles, Calif.) basket knotted the score at 18 with 7:15 remaining in the half. The Lions responded with a 13-3 run to gain some breathing room, but Hao recorded a basket and two free throws inside the last 19 seconds to trim MIT's deficit to 31-25 at the intermission.
Emerson posted seven consecutive points to start the second half; however, the Cardinal and Gray narrowed the gap to 10 on a pair of occasions, the last on a Hao layup midway through the frame. The Lions replied with a 12-2 run during the next three minutes to take control of the game.
