Coast Guard Tops MIT, 61-52

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A pair of second-half runs following a back-and-forth opening frame powered the U.S. Coast Guard Academy to a 61-52 victory over MIT in a NEWMAC women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Sabrina Drammis (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) led all players with 18 points and added nine rebounds and five steals for the Engineers (7-11, 4-9 NEWMAC). The Bears (14-3, 10-3 NEWMAC) saw four players reach double-digits in scoring, paced by sophomore Torrie Sutherland (Houston, Texas) with 14 points who also had eight boards.

After two ties and seven lead changes, a layup by junior Osheiza Otori (Metairie, La.) put MIT in front 22-20 with 3:15 left in the first half. Sutherland's three-pointer gave Coast Guard a slight edge while two free throws from junior Brittney Zimmerman (Lewistown, Pa.) gave the Bears some breathing room with just over two minutes to go. During the final 49 seconds, a pair of layups by senior Rachel Hunt (Arlington Heights, Ill.) sandwiched two Sutherland free throws resulting in a 27-26 deficit for the Engineers at halftime.

Like the first half, Drammis opened the second stanza with a layup to put the Cardinal and Gray in front. Coast Guard responded with a 13-2 run during the next four and a half minutes to reclaim the lead at 40-30. A Zimmerman trifecta started the rally and she later added two shots from the charity stripe while senior Kaitlin Ward (Saline, Mich.) capped it with back-to-back baskets.

Junior Mari Kordell (Ijamsville, Md.) ended MIT's seven-minute scoring drought with a three-pointer as the hosts eventually narrowed the gap to six (42-36) on Otori's free throw at the 9:05 mark. This was as close as it would get as the Bears generated a 10-2 spurt in the next 4:20 to establish their largest margin of the day (52-38). The Engineers continued to attack down the stretch, coming within nine points twice during the last 1:20, both times on layups by sophomore Maya Ramachandran (Fremont, Calif.) as her second effort came with three ticks left.

Ramachandran finished with 12 points and five boards as Hunt totaled eight points and three blocks. Junior Michelle Battipaglia (Katonah, N.Y.) grabbed five rebounds and two steals while freshman Liana Ilutzi (East Hanover, N.J.) dished out a game-high six assists.

Zimmerman recorded 13 points as she went 8-of-11 from the free-throw line and tacked on four assists and two steals. Sophomore Meghan Fornaro (Charlton, Mass.) posted 12 points as junior Jamie Waterman (Jasper, Ga.) tallied 10 points, eight boards, and two steals. Junior Dani Knox (Centreville, Va.) chipped in seven rebounds and six points while Ward collected three steals.

MIT returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 1 with a road trip to NEWMAC foe Mount Holyoke College while Coast Guard continues conference play on Wednesday, Jan. 29 with a home game against Clark University.
