MIT Falls to Simmons, 48-40

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Simmons College tallied 12 unanswered points during the final four minutes in regulation to pull out a 48-40 win over host MIT in non-conference women’s basketball action on Saturday. Lauren Kreckie notched a game-high 18 points and five steals in addition to five rebounds for the Sharks (6-3). Cheryl Kwinn reached double-digits in rebounding for the third game in a row with 20 boards to go along with seven points and a team-high four assists for the Engineers (3-6).
Simmons quickly established a 7-2 advantage, which MIT matched on a basket by Clara Yuan and a three-pointer from Jamie Simmons. The Sharks countered with a 17-5 run that resulted in 24-12 lead with 3:23 on the clock. MIT narrowed the gap to seven (24-17) at the break courtesy of a layup and free throw by Hannah Sparkman and a jumper from Yuan.
The Engineers recorded an 8-2 spurt during the opening six minutes of the second stanza, narrowing their deficit to one (26-25). Simmons maintained a slight edge until midway through the frame a Jamie Simmons’ steal setup a layup by Yuan which ignited a 12-4 run and resulted in MIT’s largest lead (40-36) with 4:19 remaining. A basket by Morgan Johnson cut the Sharks’ deficit in half on their next trip down the court. A pair of free throws and a jumper by Stephanie Fox put Simmons ahead for good with 2:11 left to play.
Fox finished the day with 14 points, eight boards, and four blocks for Simmons. Julianna Eagles dished out six assists as Johnson snagged four steals.
Both squads will continue action on the road next week. MIT will begin New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play at Smith College on Wednesday, Jan. 7 while Simmons will travel to Fisher College on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
