Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - A late rally by MIT fell short as Clark University held on for a 55-46 win in a NEWMAC women's basketball game on Saturday. Samia Mahjub tallied 12 points and seven rebounds while Cheryl Kwinn contributed eight points and eight boards for the Engineers (9-11, 2-6 NEWMAC). Kelsey Cappelle chipped in 10 points as Clara Yuan added eight. Sally Simpson and Kimberly Soo Hoo each grabbed five caroms.

Clark opened the contest with 12 unanswered points before a pair of free throws by Kwinn put MIT on the board at the 15:48 mark. The Cougars' double-digit advantage would hold until a jumper by Soo Hoo narrowed the gap to eight (22-14) with 6:25 on the clock. Clark countered with a 13-5 run that was capped by a three-pointer from Sara Hagstrom just before the buzzer to give the hosts a 35-19 lead at the break.

The Cougars maintained their comfortable cushion in the second stanza, as their margin grew to 17 (41-24) at 13:29. During next eight minutes, the Engineers mounted a 20-5 run that brought it within two (46-44) courtesy of a jumper by Mahjub. After being held scoreless for almost five minutes, Clark established some breathing room with four straight points. Kwinn's basket with 2:33 lowered the deficit to four (50-46), but that was as close as it would get as the Cougars scored their final five points from the charity stripe.
