CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - An 18-4 run by Wheaton College in the second half helped power it to a 57-24 win over MIT in a NEWMAC women's basketball game on Thursday. Cheryl Kwinn paced the Engineers (4-18, 0-12 NEWMAC) with eight points and a game-high eight rebounds. Jamie Simmons posted six points as Sally Simpson grabbed six boards. Kristen Whaley notched five caroms while Alice Yeh dished out six assists.
Each side traded baskets to start the game, as the Lyons eventually established a 6-5 edge after four minutes expired. The contest became a defensive battle until baskets by Amy Marshall and Whaley put MIT ahead, 9-6, at the 12:39 mark. Wheaton tallied seven straight points to reclaim the lead. A trey by Simmons on the Engineers’ next possession brought them within one (13-12) with 8:54 on the clock. The Lyons responded with a 13-0 run to close the half and take a 26-12 advantage at the break.
A basket by Kwinn just 38 seconds into the second stanza narrowed the gap to 12. Wheaton countered with its pivotal run that put the game out of reach for the Cardinal and Gray.
