CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - A game-high 17 points from Jamie Simmons coupled with 15 points and 11 rebounds from Cheryl Kwinn would not be enough as WPI, the 2009 NEWMAC regular season champion, recorded a 72-48 victory over MIT in women's basketball action on Saturday. Kristen Whaley tallied six points, six boards, and three assists while Alice Yeh posted seven points and five caroms. Simmons tacked on two blocks as Kwinn added two steals. The Engineers finished the season with an overall record of 4-19 and a 0-13 mark in the NEWMAC.
WPI inched out to a six-point advantage on two occasions, the last at 17-11 with 12:12 remaining in the opening frame. Three-pointers by Simmons and Yeh quickly evened the contest, but WPI went ahead courtesy of a free-throw. Kwinn gave the Engineers their first lead (19-18) on a pair of free throws at the 10:32 mark. Following two minutes of scoreless play, WPI claimed a one-point edge, however, a put-back by Kwinn swung the lead back to the Engineers (21-20).
A three-pointer and two shots from the charity stripe put WPI in front for good. Yeh drained another trey, which brought the Cardinal and Gray within one (25-24). WPI responded with 13 straight points to break open the game. Simmons ended the run with 11 seconds remaining on a three-pointer, which was matched by WPI right before the buzzer sounded for a 41-27 advantage.
Each side traded baskets to start the half, as layup by Kwinn brought the Engineers within 14 points. WPI denied any hopes of a momentum shift as it drained another trey on its next possession and maintained a comfortable cushion throughout the remainder of the game.
