Women's Lightweights Defeat Buffalo, Simmons at Home

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A late surge and an unlucky break were the deciding factors as the No. 7 MIT lightweight women went undefeated Saturday against crews from Simmons College and No. 8 University of Buffalo.

A light rain and gusty winds almost made conditions too rough to handle in the Charles River Basin. Nevertheless, men’s heavyweights began racing at 6 a.m. with the women taking the course shortly before 9 a.m.

In the first varsity race, the Simmons openweight boat held a slight edge through much of the 2000m race, though the Engineers came on strong through the last quarter. In the final 20 strokes, one of the Sharks caught a crab, slowing Simmons and allowing the Cardinal and Gray to take the lead and slip by for the win with just under two seconds to spare. Buffalo’s lights came in third in the first varsity race, finishing well behind their competition.

In the second varsity race, Simmons and MIT were even early, but by the midpoint, the Engineers had pulled in front. In the final 500m, MIT again dug deep and opened the lead to seven seconds, solidifying the day’s impressive performance.

MIT’s lightweights take to the water again Sunday when they face off against No. 2 Stanford University. The second varsity and varsity races are scheduled for 7:36 and 8:00 a.m., respectively.
