Engineers Capture Seventh Place at IRA National Championship

CHERRY HILL, N.J. - The MIT lightweight women’s crew concluded its 2010 spring racing season with a win in the petite final of the IRA National Championship on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J. The victory resulted in the Engineers finishing the year as the seventh-fastest lightweight women's crew in the country.

Racing began with the heats on Friday, when the Cardinal and Gray faced Stanford, Princeton, and Bucknell with the top two crews advancing to the grand final. MIT took fourth place, sending it to the afternoon repechage. In the repechage, Tech claimed the third spot, just one place from advancing to the grand final. The Engineers lost out by eight seconds to the first place finisher, Radcliffe, and five seconds to Bucknell, sending Tech to Saturday's petite-level final.

In the petite final on Saturday morning, the varsity crew raced aggressively at thirty-eight strokes per minute and, despite a strong fight from Tulsa in the first half of the race, pushed away from the Golden Hurricane to cross the finish line 16 seconds ahead in a time of 6:55.

Tech also contested the varsity lightweight four, an exhibition event at this year’s regatta, where the Engineers came in eighth.
