Women's Lightweights Capture 2nd at Knecht Cup
CHERRY HILL, N.J. – Last weekend, the MIT women’s lightweight rowers traveled to compete in the Knecht Cup Regatta, racing on both Saturday and Sunday against crews representing roughly 50 schools from around the country.
In the grand final of the varsity lightweight eight on Sunday morning, the Engineers lined up against Wisconsin A, Wisconsin B, University at Buffalo, Lafayette College, and University of Massachusetts. Capitalizing on their experience from the previous day’s racing in the varsity open eight, Tech made a strong push in the third 500 meters to gain water on Buffalo and come away with a second-place finish of 7:00.9 to Wisconsin’s 6:47.2.
The same eight then raced in the third level final of the varsity eight event at 2:10pm on Sunday afternoon, just three hours after the lightweight eight final. The crew qualified for the final race by rowing a time of 6:56.7 in the fifth of five qualifying heats on Saturday morning. In their fourth race of the weekend, the crew impressively maintained their determination to contend with their openweight counterparts and came in fifth; just one second behind University of Miami and eight seconds ahead of Mercyhurst who had previously beat Tech in Saturday’s heat.
Earlier on Sunday, Tech raced two varsity lightweight fours in the grand final of the event. Each crew earned their spot in the final by qualifying through the heats on Saturday morning. The MIT “A” entry and MIT “C” entry battled it out down the course and came across in fifth and six positions.
