Bucknell Edges Women's Lightweights at Murphy Cup
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - MIT turned in another strong performance at this weekend’s 28th Murphy Cup on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. In the afternoon final of the varsity lightweight eight, MIT took on Bucknell in a two-boat showdown. The engineers got off the line quickly and held the lead at the halfway mark. Bucknell, silver medalists at last year’s IRA National Championship, pushed hard to take the lead and came across the finish line just 3.7 seconds ahead of Tech.
Earlier in the day, the engineers second varsity eight broke down into two fours join the 3V4 in the heats of the lightweight four event. Two of MIT’s entries earned a place in the final, where they would later finish 4th and 6th. Though the team was disappointed not to place, this result marks the first time MIT has placed two boats in the final of this event.
Next up, MIT travels to Cherry Hill, N.J. for the Knecht Cup on Saturday and Sunday April 10 and 11.
