Women's Lightweights Showdown with Princeton in Season Opener

PRINCETON, N.J. – Following an intense week of spring break training on the Charles, MIT’s lightweight women travelled to Lake Carnegie to take on the Princeton University lightweights and openweight crews from Philadelphia University.

In the first event of the day, the varsity eight faced an aggressive Princeton crew and a powerful Philadelphia crew. The Cardinal and Gray rowed hard and challenged for the lead through the middle of the race, but was unable to move through the opposition and finished third.

Next, the second varsity eight lined up against the Tigers for their first test of the season. The two boats battled all the way down the course until Princeton was able to move away in the final 250 meters for a 6-second victory. In the final race, Tech’s four rowed a clean, controlled, and powerful race to beat out Princeton by over 6 seconds.

The Engineers, excited with the way each boat performed, are anxious to utilize the insights gained from this first race and continue to improve. In its next race, the team travels to Philadelphia for the Murphy Cup and a showdown with last year’s IRA silver-medal-winning boat, Bucknell University.
