Lightweight Women Place Eighth in Historic Head of the Charles Regatta

On Sunday, October 24th, MIT Lightweight Women's Crew raced in the final event of the world's largest rowing regatta: the 46th Head of the Charles Regatta.  As the crew launched from Pierce Boathouse and lined up for the starting chute, spectators had started to dwindle and many crews were packed up and headed home having already completed their racing. One of the premier events, however, was yet to be rowed: the lightweight women's eights.

Tech started the race with bow number ten, having earned the position with their placement in last year's regatta.  By the first time check at Riverside Boat Club, about half a mile in to the race, the crew found themselves in sixth position, and ahead of half of the field.  Coming into the powerhouse stretch and despite a perfectly executed turn around Weeks Footbridge by senior coxswain Man-Yan Lam, by the Weld Boathouse time check, the crew had moved to ninth position.

Finding a bit more speed and determination, and in executing an aggressive course through the finish, the crew powered to the line for an eighth place overall finish, sixth among US collegiate crews. The crew's performance marks the best ever event finish for the lightweight women, at eight percent off the winning time, a course record.

Rowing back to the dock as the regatta volunteers picked up the hundreds of racing buoys, the tents along the river were broken down, and the banks of the shore were abandoned, the crew made its way back home, to Pierce Boathouse, four miles downstream of the finish line.  In the abrupt calmness of the weekend, the crew found itself the lone boat on the river as the weekend's racing came to a close.

Next up for the lightweight women is the Foot of the Charles on Saturday, November 13th
