CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT women's lightweight crew team traveled to California over spring break to compete in its first regatta of the spring season. The Cardinal and Gray took on a number of quality crews in the San Diego Crew Classic on Sunday, April 1.
The Engineers rowed in the Ludus Tours Cup, the women's collegiate lightweight final, taking on crews from the University of California Berkeley, ranked 13th nationall, No. 3 ranked Princeton University, No. 7 ranked University of Tulsa, and defending national champion, Stanford University. MIT finished sixth out of seven boats, with its time of 8:11.16.
Racing in lane six into a strong cross-headwind, Tech struggled off the start and lost significant ground to Tulsa in the first 500 meters of the race. MIT made a strong push in the middle of the race to challenge but was not able to match Tulsa's speed across the finish line and finished sixth. The Engineers finished over a minute ahead of seventh-place California.
After its strong showing at the Crew Classic, the Cardinal and Gray moved up one spot in the national ranking to No. 8.
The lightweight women will return to the water in two weeks, at the Knecht Cup on Saturday and Sunday, April 14-15 in Cherry Hill, N.J.
