CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Rowing for the first time in the spring season, the MIT women's lightweight team competed in the annual Beanpot against crews from Boston University and Harvard-Radcliffe on the Charles River this morning. The Engineers had a total of three crews in action on their home course, racing a pair of Varsity 8 boats and as well as a Novice 4.
In the Varsity 8 race it was the crew from Harvard-Radcliffe that got off to a strong start. The Crimson were able to maintain their early advantage over the length of the 2,000-meter course and took the event with a time of 6:59.6. It then came down to a battle for second between the Engineers and the Terriers. In the end the Boston University crew pulled ahead to edge out MIT, finishing ahead of the Engineers crew by almost six seconds.
In the second Varsity 8 race the boat from Harvard-Radcliffe bested the MIT crew by nearly 30 seconds to take the win in a contest in which Boston Univ. did not field a boat. Things were closer in the Novice 4 race, which also featured just crews from MIT and Harvard-Radcliffe. The Crimson boat took this matchup as well, besting the Engineers crew by 18 seconds.
MT will be back in action on April 13 when it races at the Knecht Cup event on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.
