Women’s Lightweight Crew Posts Solid Results in Close Racing at the Knecht Cup

CHERRY HILL, N.J. – It was a good weekend for the MIT women's lightweight crew team at the Knecht Cup races held on the Cooper River. The Engineers advanced boats to the finals in both the lightweight eight and lightweight four races, taking fourth in each event in a pair of very competitive races.

Both of the lightweight eight boats started their weekend on Saturday in Heat 1 of the opening round; with the A crew in lane 2 and the B crew in lane 5. The Engineer's A boat turned in an outstanding effort, advancing to the final by finishing second to a crew from the University of Tulsa by less than two seconds and ahead of a pair of entries from the University of Wisconsin, besting the Badgers A crew by nearly three and a half seconds. It was the first time that MIT has defeated a Wisconsin crew in women's lightweight racing. MIT's B entry finished fifth and did not advance.

MIT's lightweight four entries were in different heats on Saturday. Both crews finished third in their heats; with the 'A' boat posting the fourth-fastest time overall to advance to the finals, finishing behind teams from Penn State and Tulsa and ahead of crews from Lafayette and Liberty. The 'B' crew was third as well, finishing ahead of teams from Charleston and Maryland, but missed by one spot in advancing to the finals.

In Sunday's finals of the eights, the MIT 'A' boat took fourth in a very competitive field, finishing just seven seconds behind the winning crew from Wisconsin. The Engineers finished ahead of both Boston University and the Wisconsin 'B' crew and was just a little more than a second behind Tulsa for third.

For the MIT 'A' crew in the fours it was also a fourth-place finish, finishing 15 seconds behind the winners from Penn State and ahead of crews from Pittsburgh and Lafayette.

MIT also raced a novice eight boat on Saturday, with the crew failing to advance to the semifinals after finishing sixth in their heat.

MIT will return home to the Charles River next weekend when the Engineers will face off against crews from Stanford, Princeton, Wisconsin, Harvard-Radcliffe and Boston University.
