Lightweight Novice 4 Crew Picks Up Win at Beanpot

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Just a couple of weeks removed from the Charles River losing its ice, the MIT women's lightweight crew team opened the 2014 portion of its season this morning by hosting the annual Beanpot competition between the Engineers and crews from Boston University and Harvard-Radcliffe.

Despite the approaching rainy weather, it turned out to be a good day for racing on the Charles. In the final event of the day, the Novice 4 race, MIT was victorious over Harvard-Radcliffe as the Engineers nosed across the finish line just 1.4 seconds ahead of the Crimson.

In a battle of teams all ranked in the top-10 in the preseason USRowing Collegiate Poll, No. 3 Harvard-Radcliffe came out on top in the Varsity 8 race, covering the course in 6:46.7. Ranked No. 5 in the preseason poll, Boston University was the next crew across the finish, placing eight seconds behind Harvard-Radcliffe. No. 8 ranked MIT was third, clocking a 7:15.4 time. In the 2V8 race the results were the same, with Harvard-Radcliffe winning with a time of 7:03.5 to finish 6.5 seconds ahead of BU and 29.5 seconds ahead of MIT.
