FELLSMERE, Fla. - MIT women's crew opened its season on Canal 54, a narrow, but well-protected four-lane waterway. The Engineers enjoyed a fabulous effort competing against host Florida Tech and the novice crew from Miami University.
In the women's novice eight, MIT's lightweight squad dominated the field, winning the heat in 7:16.6. It was a promising effort for the rookie crew, which utilized Kelly Chien as the boat's coxswain. Kate Madden stroked for the shell, while Jessica Lee powered the bow. Rounding out Tech's winning unit was Erqi Liu, Lisa Nakano, Lauren McCarthy, Jessica Lynch, Clarissa Zimmerman and Laura Roberts.
The lightweight novice four also enjoyed a solid effort, outdistancing Tech's two boats in the varsity four. Finishing with a time of 8:10.0, the Engineers crossed just behind Miami's A boat.
In the women's varsity eight, MIT covered the 2000-meter course in 7:05.7, finishing five seconds off the pace set by FIT.
