Lightweight Eight Nets Runner-Up Honors at Murphy Cup

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The MIT lightweight women's team kicked off the 2009 spring season at the Murphy Cup in Philadelphia with a strong team-wide performance on Saturday. All of the crews performed well, especially the varsity lightweight eight, which raced to a runner-up finish behind the second-fastest time of the day.
In the varsity lightweight eight, the Engineers faced off against Lafayette, Bucknell, Lehigh, and Duquesne. Facing a challenge from Lehigh in the middle of the race, the Engineers stayed tough and executed their race plan to power through and come up with the silver medal, closing eight seconds behind Bucknell. With the finish, MIT continues its progress up the ranks of Division I lightweight eights.
Earlier in the day, the Engineers fielded two entries in the varsity lightweight four. The MIT “B” entry battled down the course to finish fourth, just missing a qualifying spot in the final. The MIT “A” entry rowed to a third-place finish in the heats before finishing fifth in the final.
In the novice four event, the lightweights took on a field of openweights and finishing first in the heat to secure their place in the final. The victory served as an impressive win for the Cardinal and Gray, which finished nearly with 12 seconds ahead of second place West Virginia. In the final, the crew powered their way to a fourth-place finish with an impressive time of 8:10.8.
Next up for the Engineers is a trip to Princeton, where the lights will take on their Eastern Sprints rivals at Lake Carnegie on April 4th.
