CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The University of Buffalo defeated MIT crew in driving rain, Saturday, along the Charles River. Although poor weather forced some crews to modify its races, most of the women's teams completed the entire 2000-meter course, with the novice lightweights highlighting the day's events.
MIT's novice lightweights finished its race in 5:37.01, just over one second back of Buffalo's varsity lightweight team. The narrow defeat was an encouraging sign for the lightweight program, which lost its bid for an upset against an extremely competent opponent.
Competing on Sunday, in much better weather, the women's varsity eight finished third overall in its race, losing to the Bulls and first-place finishers, the University of Rhode Island. Squeezing into the race, URI easily outpaced Buffalo and the Engineers, winning with a clip of 7:11.84. MIT crossed the finish in 7:32.01.
The women's varsity four also entered a boat on Sunday, but a strong start by Rhode Island enabled the Rams to seal a win in that race as well.
