CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The women's lightweight rowing team swept the University of Massachusetts with victories in both the eight and four. Once again, the novice crew led the way, winning all three sections.
In the varsity eight, MIT's novice crew covered the 2000-meter course in 7:15.8 to easily outdistance its opponent from Amherst. UMass finished second overall in the heat (7:37.3), with a combination of varsity and novice rowers combining to take third for the Engineers (7:46.4).
The Cardinal and Gray took the top spot in the second varsity eight and the varsity four as well. Tech's top novice unit split 7:48 to win the eight, while a clip of 8:23 secured first place in the four.
It was a challenging race for MIT coxswains Jo Duh, Kelly Chien and Ellen Chen, who maintained great composure despite facing tough winds that repeatedly drove the shells toward the Cambridge shore.
